"A Select Collection of Old English Plays, Volume 06" by Robert Dodsley and W. Carew Hazlitt is a compilation of early English dramas published in the mid-19th century. This volume includes five plays that bridge the gap between moral plays and more structured forms of tragedy and comedy, reflecting the evolution of English theatre. The works aim to offer insight into their historical and social contexts, featuring characters that range from allegorical representations to historical figures, exploring themes such as conscience, love, and the human condition. At the start of the volume, the opening portion introduces "The Conflict of Conscience," a play by Nathaniel Woodes. The prologue sets the stage for a dramatic exploration of the inner turmoil of a character named Philologus, who grapples with the fear of losing his life and worldly possessions, leading to a crisis of faith. The dialogue unfolds between various characters, highlighting the struggle between spiritual integrity and the temptations of external pressures. Key figures such as Conscience, Mathesis, and Satan emerge, reflecting the moral dilemmas of the period, while the intermingling of allegory and personal conviction offers a rich basis for understanding the challenges faced by individuals in a tumultuous religious landscape.
