"En flânant de Messine à Cadix" by Eugène Montfort is a travelogue written in the early 20th century. It traces a flâneur’s Mediterranean journey from southern Italy through Sicily toward North Africa and Spain, blending lyrical landscape sketches with on-the-spot reportage and social observation, especially around the Messina–Reggio earthquake’s aftermath. The opening of the work follows the narrator leaving Naples, dreaming of reaching Tangier by sea but first taking the train through Calabria to Sicily. He watches the coastline give way to earthquake damage, then in Reggio and across the strait in Messina he confronts vast ruins, silent streets, and a provisional city of wooden barracks, with striking survivals like the Palazzata’s facades, a Neptune statue, and the intact theater. Between grim vistas and a rare oasis—a cement-built pension untouched—he listens to locals: an innkeeper explaining how people survive tremors and, in Taormina, a hotelier recounting the first days’ chaos, looting, desperate rescues, and families scattered. This section closes with renewed travel toward Palermo, the mood oscillating between awe at the landscape and sober reflection on catastrophe and rebuilding.
