Benson, C. O. (Charles Oren)
"Constipation and its correction by exercise by C. O. Benson" is a scientific guidebook written in the early 20th century. The book addresses the causes, effects, and remedies for constipation, focusing particularly on the role of physical exercise in maintaining digestive health. Aimed at the general public, it combines medical insights with practical advice, reflecting the health concerns and therapeutic approaches common in the late 1920s. The book begins by emphasizing the negative impact of constipation on overall health, linking it to premature aging, chronic disease, and everyday discomforts such as headaches and low energy. It outlines the primary causes of constipation, including lack of exercise, poor diet, laxative abuse, faulty posture, and ignoring natural urges. Benson methodically stresses the importance of regular bowel habits, proper hydration, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and a positive mental attitude. The core of the book is a detailed set of thirty practical exercises designed to stimulate the abdominal organs, improve posture, and encourage regularity. Benson concludes by encouraging readers to incorporate a variety of these exercises into their daily routines, highlighting that consistent physical activity, rather than reliance on medication, is pivotal to both preventing and correcting constipation.
