"The Poetic Edda: Translated from the Icelandic with an introduction and notes" is a collection of Old Norse anonymous poems composed in alliterative verse over several centuries. These ancient works, preserved in the medieval Codex Regius manuscript, contain mythological tales and heroic legends passed orally from poet to poet. The poems feature gods, dwarfs, and legendary figures like Attila, written in clear, unadorned language. This seminal collection has profoundly influenced Scandinavian literature and inspired writers from Tolkien to Borges with its dramatic storytelling and innovative poetic forms.
