"Christmas Carols: Old English Carols for Christmas and Other Festivals" by Walter et al. is a collection of traditional carols compiled during the early 20th century, specifically published in the autumn of 1922. This compilation emphasizes the rich cultural heritage of English carols that are associated with the celebration of Christmas and other festive occasions. The book likely draws from various folk traditions and reflects the ways in which these songs evolved, blending pre-Christian and Christian elements. The content of the book consists of a variety of carols that celebrate the Christmas season, including well-known songs such as "Good King Wenceslas," "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," and "The First Nowell." Each carol is accompanied by musical harmonizations, which enhance their lyrical quality and make them suitable for both individual and communal singing. The illustrations throughout the book add a visual dimension to the carols, encapsulating the spirit of joy and celebration that defines the Christmas season. The collection aims to preserve not just the melodies and stories of these songs but also the communal and festive aspects of their performance, encouraging readers to engage with this historical and cultural tradition.
