"Verdadeiro metodo de estudar (Vol. I)" by Luís António Verney is a pedagogical work published in 1746. Written under the pseudonym "Barbadinho da Congregação de Itália" to avoid cultural opposition, this manifesto champions Enlightenment ideals for reforming Portuguese education. Through sixteen letters addressed to a University of Coimbra doctor, Verney critiques traditional teaching methods and proposes progressive reforms—including controversial positions like women's access to education—inspired by his contact with Italian Enlightenment thinkers and modern European institutions.
