"The Salton Sea: An account of Harriman's fight with the Colorado River" by George Kennan is a historical account written in the early 20th century. The book delves into the dramatic transformation of the Imperial Valley from a barren desert to a lush agricultural oasis, highlighting the monumental challenges faced during this undertaking, especially the threats posed by the Colorado River. Central to the narrative is E. H. Harriman, a key figure who played a crucial role in saving this valley from potential ruin due to flooding and mismanagement. The opening of this work sets the stage by describing the geological history of the Salton Sink and the subsequent efforts leading up to its reclamation. It outlines the origins of the region as a dried-out desert and the groundbreaking vision of figures like Professor Blake and Dr. Wozencraft, who foresaw the land's potential for agriculture if water could be diverted from the Colorado River. As Harriman becomes embroiled in the ensuing fight against the river's uncontrollable floods, the narrative emphasizes the combination of human ingenuity and the relentless power of nature.
