"Bantu Folk Lore (Medical and General)" by Matthew L. Hewat is a detailed ethnographic study written in the early 20th century. The work explores the medical beliefs, practices, and cultural lore of the Bantu tribes, providing valuable insight into their healing methods and societal structures. The book serves to document practices that were rapidly vanishing due to the influences of colonialism and modernization, thus capturing a crucial piece of cultural history. The opening of the text presents a contextual background in which the author discusses his personal experiences among the Bantu people in the border districts of the Cape Colony. He emphasizes the urgency of documenting their medical folk lore, as traditional practices are being overshadowed by Western civilization. Hewat introduces topics such as the importance of the Bantu tribes’ herbal remedies, the role of witchcraft in their understanding of illness, and the various superstitions that underpin their medical practices. Through detailed observations and references to contributions made by local informants, the opening lays the groundwork for a thorough examination of how the Bantu people interpret health, disease, and the natural world around them.
