"The Best of Fences" by Randall Garrett is a science fiction novel written in the mid-20th century. Set amidst the backdrop of interstellar colonization and contact with alien civilizations, the story explores humanity's race against an elusive extraterrestrial species in their quest to dominate the stars. The book delves into themes of communication, competition, and humanity's psychological response to the discovery of intelligent life beyond Earth. The narrative follows Romm Parmay, who has recently been appointed as the Chief of Psychological Contact, a role essential in managing the interaction between Earth and the newly found alien race. As Parmay prepares a mission to explore space and establish communication, he grapples with the implications of having an advanced alien civilization that seems to be ahead in technology and exploration. Alongside his wife, Alina, a researcher focused on hypersee technology, Parmay uncovers several truths about the aliens: their home may lie not among terrestrial planets but within gas giants, leading to the possibility of peaceful coexistence rather than competition. The story culminates in the understanding that both races possess unique advantages and can thrive without conflict, encapsulated in the proverb that "good fences make good neighbors," thereby emphasizing the importance of boundaries and mutual respect in interstellar relations.
