The opening of the narrative sets the stage for the expedition, detailing the motivations behind the journey, which is to negotiate peace and land treaties with the Pawnee and other tribes. Irving introduces key members of his party, including government officials and support staff, while also describing the challenges faced in the wild frontier. The text paints a picture of the lush yet unforgiving prairies as they cross the Kanzas River, encountering various characters from the indigenous tribes and reflecting on the complexities of their cultures and the unfortunate effects of European colonization.
