United States. Congress. House. Committee on Un-American Activities
"Investigation of Communist Activities in Seattle, Wash., Area--Part 1" is a historical account of congressional hearings conducted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in the mid-20th century. The hearings aim to investigate and expose the extent of Communist Party activities in the Seattle area, highlighting individuals' testimonies, including that of Eugene Victor Dennett, who has extensive knowledge about the Communist movement in the Pacific Northwest. The opening of the proceedings sets the stage for a formal inquiry, outlining the organizational structure of the committee and the purpose of the hearings. From the very start, testimonies, particularly that of Eugene Dennett, reveal insights into his experiences including his initial membership in the Communist Party, his roles within the organization, and the methods used to recruit others. As Dennett recounts his journey, the narrative illustrates the complex interplay of social, economic, and political factors that made Communist ideologies appealing during a time of significant unrest and change, particularly during the Great Depression and the subsequent labor struggles.
