Browne, Kathryn Eleanor
"The Development of Certain Tendencies in Modern Opera" by Kathryn Eleanor Browne is a scholarly thesis written in the early 20th century. This work examines the evolution of various elements in opera, specifically focusing on structural aspects rather than harmonic analysis. It likely covers important transformations in opera from its early forms to contemporary practices, analyzing how different composers contributed to these changes. The opening of the thesis provides an introduction to the scope and methodology of Browne's research. It outlines her intent to trace the development of key tendencies in opera, such as character types, orchestration, and the structure of acts and scenes. To facilitate this study, Browne analyzes thirty-four operas, creating detailed tables to quantify aspects such as the distribution of orchestral work, solos, and ensemble pieces. This thorough approach sets the foundation for a broader discussion on the historical context of opera and the influence of notable composers through time.
