"The Waterways of the Pacific Northwest" by Clarence Bagley is a historical account written in the early 20th century. The book explores the rivers and waterways of the Pacific Northwest, particularly focusing on the Columbia River, Puget Sound, and their tributaries. Bagley, who dedicated much of his life to documenting the region's history, presents an overview of the development, exploration, and significance of these waterways in shaping the economic and social landscape of the Pacific Northwest. In this work, Bagley traces the history of exploration and settlement in the region, beginning with early figures such as Alexander Mackenzie, Lewis and Clark, and others who ventured westward. He discusses the challenges faced by settlers and the roles waterways played in transportation and commerce. Throughout the book, Bagley touches upon key developments, such as the rise of steam navigation, railroad construction, and improvements to navigation which facilitated greater trade and settlement. He also considers the potential of the region's water power and the impact of infrastructure projects, suggesting that while waterways served as vital arteries for movement and commerce, they eventually became intertwined with land-based transportation methods as the area progressed into the modern age.
