Griffith, J. W. (John William)
"An Elementary Text-book of the Microscope" by J. W. Griffith is a scientific publication written in the mid-19th century. The book serves as an instructional guide aimed at beginners, focusing on the use and application of the microscope to study the microstructure of plants and animals. It covers a range of topics including the preparation and mounting of specimens, necessary techniques for observation, and the optical principles that govern the instrument's functionality. At the start of the work, Griffith outlines the purpose of the book, explaining that it assumes no prior knowledge of microscopy and aims to simplify complex descriptions and terminology. The introduction highlights the components of the microscope, detailing the names and functions of each part, such as the objective lenses, stage, and mirror, while emphasizing careful handling to avoid damage. Additionally, the preface encourages hands-on engagement with nature by collecting and examining specimens, promoting a practical approach to learning through direct observation. The opening chapters also discuss the methods of preparing and mounting objects for microscopic examination, establishing a foundation for the subsequent exploration of plant and animal tissue structures.
