"The Post Office of India and Its Story" by Geoffrey Clarke is a historical account likely written in the early 20th century. The book examines the establishment and evolution of the Indian postal system, detailing its development from a disorganized collection of services to an extensive, imperial department. The narrative tracks significant milestones, including the introduction of postage stamps, postal regulations, and the system's adaptation to the needs of a diverse population. At the start of this work, Clarke provides an overview of the early structure and function of the Post Office in India, illustrating the chaotic state of postal services prior to 1854 and the subsequent reforms initiated through the Post Office Act. He highlights the establishment of a central authority under a Director-General and the introduction of standardized postage rates and stamps, emphasizing how these changes transformed communication across the vast subcontinent.
