"Georgian Folk Tales" by Marjory Scott Wardrop is a collection of traditional stories written in the late 19th century. This compilation provides a glimpse into the rich folklore of Georgia, featuring tales that revolve around themes of fate, wisdom, and the interplay between good and evil. The stories introduce various characters, including peasants, princes, and mythical beings, who navigate their fates through cunning, bravery, and moral lessons. The opening of "Georgian Folk Tales" sets the stage for the magical and moralistic narratives to follow. It begins with a preface where Wardrop discusses her dedication to translating Georgian folk literature, reflecting on Georgia's cultural richness and the significance of its tales as a reflection of the people's emotions and social fabric. This is followed by the first story, "Master and Pupil," where a peasant's son, through cleverness and transformation, outwits a devil who seeks to claim him as a pupil. Both the preface and the opening story highlight the themes of cunning, the struggle against malicious forces, and the journey of self-discovery that will be prevalent throughout the collection.
