"The Ballads & Songs of Derbyshire" by Llewellynn Frederick William Jewitt is a collection of traditional ballads and songs written in the mid-19th century. This volume serves as a tribute to the rich musical and poetic heritage of Derbyshire, featuring over fifty ballads that reflect local events, traditions, and characters unique to the county. The editor aims to bring attention to this neglected cultural treasure, offering both text and musical notation to preserve the artistry of Derbyshire's folk traditions. At the start of the collection, Jewitt introduces the context and significance of the ballads, noting the absence of previous compilations dedicated to Derbyshire's folklore. He emphasizes the importance of preserving these songs, many of which are cited for the first time. The introductory part sets the stage for the individual ballads that follow, with a promise of insightful notes illustrating their origins and historical relevance. The aim is to valorize Derbyshire's literary contributions and to encourage further exploration into its rich folklore. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
