Holmes, E. Bruce
"Variation in the Muscles and Nerves of the Leg in Two Genera of Grouse" by E. Bruce Holmes is a scientific publication written in the early 1960s. This study focuses on anatomical variations in the muscles and nerves of the legs of various grouse species, specifically those in the genera Tympanuchus and Pedioecetes. The work aims to provide insights into the differences in myology between these closely related bird species. The opening of the publication outlines the research objectives, which include analyzing individual variation in the anatomy of the specified grouse species, identifying consistent differences in the leg myology between the two genera, and comparing their muscular structures to understand evolutionary relationships. Holmes details the methods for specimen collection and dissection, emphasizing the systematic approach taken to document anatomical features and variations. The intro sets the stage for a meticulous scientific examination of the anatomy of these grouse, highlighting its importance in understanding bird musculature and possibly broader ecological implications.
