The work includes various epitaphs that reflect the whims, professions, and characteristics of the deceased, illustrating a rich tapestry of human life and values as memorialized in grave markers. It encompasses a diverse range of subjects, from tradesmen to notable figures, showcasing the creative ways in which people have been commemorated. The opening of the compilation introduces several epitaphs, starting with those dedicated to tradesmen, specifically watchmakers. Each epitaph displays a blend of wit and sentimentality, capturing the essence of the individuals through clever wordplay and metaphor that relates their professions to their lives and afterlives. For instance, the epitaph for George Routleigh, a watchmaker, poetically likens his life to the workings of a clock, showcasing a humorous yet respectful tribute to his character and skills.
