"Rikke-tikke-tak" by Hendrik Conscience is a novel written in the early 20th century. The story centers around the lives of Lena and Jan, whose intertwined destinies unfold within the harsh realities of rural life, marked by the cruelty of Lena's employer—the farmer's wife—and the deepening friendship between Lena and Jan as they navigate their struggles. The narrative explores themes of suffering, love, and resilience amidst the backdrop of the early 19th-century Flanders. The opening of the tale sets a vivid scene in a rural farmhouse, introducing Lena, a young girl bound by the hardships imposed by her cruel employer, and the gentle yet strong-hearted Jan, who empathizes with her plight both as a friend and protector. The text reveals Lena's secret ambitions, her dreams of escape, and her profound suffering caused by the farm's unforgiving environment. Amidst her labor, Lena frequently breaks into a haunting song, "Rikke-tikke-tak," a melodic reminder of her lost childhood and dreams.
