"Dorothy at Oak Knowe" by Evelyn Raymond is a novel written in the early 20th century. The story follows a young girl named Dorothy Calvert who arrives at the Oak Knowe School for Girls in Canada after a long and lonely journey. Upon her arrival, she faces a series of misadventures that include being lost and meeting kind but eccentric locals, quickly establishing the tone for her experiences at the school. At the start of the tale, Dorothy arrives at the Toronto railway station to find herself forgotten by the person supposed to meet her, leading to a distressing moment where she fears being lost. After encountering a friendly but clumsy old man named John Gilpin, she is comforted and assisted as they embark on the journey to her new school.
