Great Britain. Board of Trade. Railway Department
"Report of the Railway Department of the Board of Trade on the London, Worcester, and Wolverhampton, and on the Birmingham and Shrewsbury Districts" is a governmental publication presented by the Board of Trade in the mid-19th century, specifically in 1845. This report outlines the proposed railways connecting significant industrial cities and their surrounding districts, emphasizing the necessity of improved transportation for commercial and public interests. The focus is on the competition between two railway schemes aimed at enhancing communication in the regions mentioned. The report discusses the need for railway communication to benefit the mining and manufacturing districts of Staffordshire, particularly between Wolverhampton and Worcester. It explores the implications of two primary competing schemes—the London and Birmingham Company and the Great Western Railway Company—each seeking to establish a line. The report highlights the industry's perspective favoring the construction of railways over existing canal routes, citing the economic advantages of faster and more efficient transport for coal, iron, and goods. Ultimately, the report advocates for the London and Birmingham scheme due to its alignment with public interests and potential for future expansion, while also addressing concerns about gauge standardization and competition.
