Ewing, Juliana Horatia
"Mary's Meadow, and Other Tales of Fields and Flowers" by Juliana Horatia Ewing is a collection of children's stories written in the late 19th century. The stories primarily revolve around themes of nature, gardening, and childhood adventures, reflecting the author's fondness for floral and pastoral life. The narrative focuses on children living near a meadow, navigating relationships with their neighbors, and the lessons imparted by their experiences, often with a touch of humor and poignancy. The beginning of the book introduces the themes of neighborly quarrels and the idealism of childhood through the eyes of a young girl, Mary, and her family. The story briefly depicts a dispute between Mary's father and the local wealthy squire regarding a right-of-way through "Mary's Meadow." Mary's perspective is both innocent and insightful as she expresses her desire for a harmonious relationship with their neighbor despite the ongoing conflict. The narrative also hints at the children's fascination with the natural world, embodied in their playful interactions with the meadow and various characters, including their beloved dog, Saxon. As they grapple with their mother’s teachings about selflessness and community, the children’s adventures into nature promise a journey filled with personal growth and exploration.
