"Kampagne in Frankreich" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is an autobiographical prose work written between 1819 and 1822. Goethe recounts his participation in the 1792 campaign of German and Austrian monarchs against revolutionary France, joining at his patron's request. The narrative follows the march toward Paris, culminating in the Battle of Valmy, where French forces compelled the Prussian-Austrian alliance into costly retreat. Amid cannon fire and hardship, Goethe witnesses the brutal realities of war while pursuing his studies in color theory between battles. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
