"La Culture des Idées" by Remy de Gourmont is a philosophical treatise written in the late 19th century. This work delves into the nature of writing, style, and the subconscious aspects of creativity and thought. Gourmont engages with the concepts of literary style as a personal expression and critiques the implications of failing to appreciate or cultivate one's writing abilities. The opening of this treatise sets the stage for a detailed exploration of writing as a craft. Gourmont begins by critiquing writers who dismiss the importance of style, identifying two distinct categories of writers: those who possess true literary talent and those who do not. He asserts that writing is a discipline that can be learned, yet style, which reflects individual personality, is inherent and unique. By contrasting examples from literary history and addressing the evolution of language and style throughout the ages, Gourmont positions his argument within a broader philosophical context, examining how deeply intertwined our ideas and the forms in which we express them truly are.
