Wieck, Friedrich
"Piano and Song: How to Teach, How to Learn, and How to Form a Judgment of Musical Performances" by Friedrich Wieck is a musical instructional manual translated from German and written in the late 19th century. The book serves as a guide for piano teachers and students, illustrating Wieck's unique teaching methods and philosophies on music education. It provides insights into techniques for learning the piano and emphasizes the importance of developing a solid musical foundation. At the start of the text, the translator introduces Friedrich Wieck, noting his significance as a distinguished music teacher and the father of the celebrated pianist Clara Schumann. The opening chapter focuses on elementary piano instruction, showcasing a dialogue between the author, referred to as Dominie, and a parent questioning their child's piano education. Dominie expresses his dissatisfaction with rigid teaching methods and advocates for a more natural, step-by-step approach to piano learning that fosters enjoyment and encourages the development of musical skills through engaging exercises rather than mere rote memorization of notes.
