"Democracy and Social Ethics" by Jane Addams is a collection of essays written in the early 20th century. The work builds upon the author's insights from a series of lectures, focusing on the interconnectedness between ethical progress, democracy, and social relations. It examines how moral obligations extend beyond personal and family responsibilities to include broader societal duties, encouraging readers to confront social inequities and ethical dilemmas arising from the modern democratic context. The opening of the book introduces the theme of personal versus social ethics, emphasizing the importance of recognizing our responsibilities as members of a larger community. Addams reflects on the limitations of individual moral standards that are insufficient in addressing contemporary societal complexities and encourages a shift toward collective action.
