"Armenian Literature: Comprising Poetry, Drama, Folk-lore, and Classic Traditions" by Robert Arnot is a collection of literary works and cultural insights from Armenia, translated into English for the first time in the early 20th century. The text explores various facets of Armenian literary tradition, including poetry, folklore, and drama, and reflects on the historical influences that shaped these narratives. This anthology seeks to illuminate the themes of Armenian spirituality, cultural heritage, and resilience in the face of historical adversities. The opening of the work presents an in-depth introduction by Robert Arnot, where he comments on the evolution of Armenian literature from its ancient roots, emphasizing the ecclesiastical tones and mythological tales that have survived through time. Arnot discusses significant figures and influences, such as Gregory the Illuminator, who sought to eradicate pagan literature, and Moses of Chorene, who preserved some of the scant remnants of early Armenian poetry. Through this introduction, readers are coaxed into understanding the rich tapestry of Armenian culture marked by a struggle between ancient beliefs and the burgeoning influence of Christianity, setting the stage for the narratives and folklore that follow in the actual body of the collection.
